preparing garden

Spring gardening is the most liberating and fun experience of the whole year. It helps us access our inner child while playing in the dirt and making something functional and beautiful. Getting ready for the coming spring is a vital step to ensure that your garden will thrive throughout the year.

If you want to learn about how to take your garden to the next level, we've put together a list of ideas to get your garden ready for the spring.

1. Clean Up Your Act

If you think that winters have turned your garden a bit sad and untidy, now is time to fix everything. Remove weeds and unnecessary plants that have survived the colder months. Sweep and rake up any debris and leaves and add them to the compost pile. Trim the edges with a spade or a snipper.

2. Prune Shrubs and Flowers

In mild winter regions, prune shrubs and other landscape blooms before new shoots are more than 1/2-inch long. Place cuts to shape roses and remove dead or wayward stems. In the coldest regions, don't do pruning until the last average spring frost date has passed.

3. Remove Weeds

It's never too early when it comes to weeding. Pull them out as soon as you see any in your garden. Time the major weeding project after a rainy day, when soil is soft, and weeds come out easily. You can also use a pre-emergent weedicide or herbicide to prevent the weed seed from germination.

4. Nourish The Soil

To prepare your garden for spring, incorporate a lot of well-rotted compost or manure and also sprinkle some organic fertilizer. This is essential, especially when you plan to spread mulch. Although mulch is good, it tends to deplete the soil of its nutrients when it breaks down.

5. Add Mulch

Once your soil is well-nourished and moist, spread a thick layer of mulch to conserve the moisture. Mulch also stops weeds from growing. But don't spread it around the trees' trunk and the plants' stem to prevent rot.

6. Sow Seeds That Need a Longer Season

Grow the seeds of plants early in January and February that take longer growing time. For example, start plants like begonias, germaniums, antirrhinums, aubergines, and peppers in a heated propagator, or something similar, to ensure perfect growth.

7. Gardening Tool Maintenance

Just like your soil, it's also important for your garden tools to be clean and free of germs. As soon as spring approaches, sharpen all your knives and shears and oil them to ensure a good clean cut when using them on your plants.

8. Get Rid of Pests

Even after cleaning, weeding, and doing everything to prevent your plants from diseases, sometimes pests and insects still get drawn to your plants. Check the undersides of leaves for small flies and bugs. Some species can be wiped off, but you'll need to use special pest sprays to treat a severe attack.

9. Look After Garden Furniture

While preparing your garden for spring, don't forget to clean your garden furniture. Whether made of wood, wicker, or plastic, your outdoor furniture is going to need a bit of maintenance. Plastic furniture is easy to revive with some warm soapy water. But furniture made of wood needs a bit more help. Start with simple cleaning like dusting and wiping, and then use suitable wood oil to seal it and protect it from the outside weather.

Good luck! You got this!
